Did you know that the universe is mainly composed of the fourth state of matter? What is the fourth state of matter? Yep, the fourth state of matter is an ionized gas called a PLASMA. Although we normally observe solids, liquids, and gases here on Earth, plasmas do find their way into our homes. Have you ever rubbed your feet on the carpet and zapped your brother, sister, or friend? OUCH. The light you saw is the by-product of the discharge or plasma generated. The light generated from fluorescent light bulbs is a result of a plasma activating the fluorescent coating on the inside surface of the bulb wall.

Scouts creatively design their own electrodes. The product results in an artistic purplish glow. Scouts and engineers are cool. Scouts competed with leaders. Scouts won!!

Warning: High voltages and vacuum equipment are needed for this experiment. This experiment is NOT to be performed at home and requires qualified supervision.
